I can fulfill the validity because people voted: Hasina
Responding to criticism against the BNP-led 10th parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the government has been able to fulfill the five-year term due to the participation of the people in that election.
In the meeting of Awami League executive council on Ganabhaban the next day of the fourth anniversary of the election, he said, "Five January elections have not been voter-free in any way. 40 percent of the vote was cast. "
With no participation in the non-partisan government, the election of January 5, 2014 without participation of BNP-led coalition and more than half of the registered with the Communist Party of Bangladesh is held. Awami League formed the government for the second consecutive term after winning the election.
In 154 constituencies, the Awami League and its allies have been elected as MPs in the uncontested elections. Voter presence in the centers is less visible in the fear of violence in BNP's election campaign.
Later, the Election Commission said that in all the constituencies where the elections were held, 40 percent of the votes were cast.
Referring to the violent activities of BNP-led alliance in the election, Sheikh Hasina said, "Khaleda Zia burned the people with fire, 582 schools burned, presiding officer, assistant presiding officer killed in order to stop the polls. Yet their people have stood still. "
BNP has demanded the next national election under non-partisan government by alleging that Bangladesh has "demolished democracy" through a one-party election.
But the ruling Awami League president Sheikh Hasina says, "We (the people) voted in that election, so that we could complete four years."
On the other hand, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in 1996 and the then military ruler HM Ershad in 1988 could not survive due to the lack of public support, she said.
